Potted Tomatoes

On Saturday, I bought three more tomato plants from Forni Brown in Calistoga – under the wire before they close to the public. I felt like I wanted just a few more this year, so I could test out some new varieties. So I chose three varieties that I could put into terra cotta pots (because my raised beds are maxed).

It was important to choose varieties that will not grow too tall since these plants will be in pots. I’m going to support them with smaller versions of the iron obelisks I currently have in my vegetable garden, supporting my cucumbers. After consulting with the folks at Forni-Brown, I chose the following three varieties:

1. Jaune Flamme – This beautiful and especially flavorful heirloom is from Norbert Perreira of Helliner, France. A perfect, fruity blend of sweet and tart, Jaune Flamme (or Yellow Flame in French) excels, whether dried or roasted. This tomato is an early producer and will yield orange 3-4 ounce fruit.

2. Green Grape – A favorite heirloom of farm markets and restaurants, thanks to its unique tart flavor and attractive presentation. Originally created by crossing Yellow Pear with Evergreen, Green Grape produces clusters of 6-8 yellow-green 1″ fruits. Btw – Thomas Keller requested that Forni Brown grow this particular tomato for him!

3. Ace 55 – This tomato is one of the most popular varieties chosen by vegetable gardeners looking for a tomato with low-acidity. Its heritage dates back to the 40s and promises to grow a scant 3 to 5 feet – perfect for my containers. My Ace will yield these beautiful red tomatoes, about 7 ounces each.

Next weekend, I look forward to planting my tomatoes with companion basil, once my new containers & the soil arrive during Tuesday’s delivery.
