Dogwoods in bloom

Our ‘Eddie’s White Wonder’ is in bloom again and its appearance truly marks the beginning of spring. Its beautiful white flowers are some of the first to appear in the garden. They only last about a month, sadly, but we savor every moment we have them.

We have tried different dogwood varieties over the years, but I haven’t found a variety that makes more of a statement that ‘Eddie’s White Wonder’. We have massed several trees together in one section of our garden for more impact and used this one variety for its larger flowers.

An early mistake I made was planting them in partial shade, thinking that these delicate trees would prefer that. However their preference is full sun – and in the Napa Valley full sun is truly full sun. They’ve thrived in full sun and get a little taller each year, adding to their spring impact from year to year.
