Healthy radishes

Did you know that the radish is a cruciferous vegetable? I didn’t know that until this year. When I think of cruciferous vegetables, I think of the well-known ones: broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, collard greens, kale and cabbage. But this family also includes radishes, chard, turnip greens, arugula, mustard greens and watercress!

There are many health benefits to regularly consuming cruciferous vegetables. They contain many nutrients including calcium, folate, iron, fiber, vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium, selenium and cancer-fighting agents such as glucosinolates, phytochemicals and antioxidants.

Radishes are a staple in my garden. Beginning in February or so, I plant rows of seeds, which produce radishes ready for my table within three weeks, sun and weather permitting. They are singularly the most satisfying seed to plant for instant gratification because it happens so quickly. When I harvest my radishes, I plant more rows of seeds and continue this practice all summer long. It’s fun to try different varieties, although French Breakfast is a favorite.

While I always knew I liked radishes, I am now excited to learn that they’re really healthy to consume!
