Spring is in the air

With the first full moon in April past, it is time to plan and plant my summer garden.  My garden, which consists of 100 square feet of raised beds, fruit trees and hillside planting, yielded such a plethora of produce last year that my freezer and pantry still give a taste of last year’s garden.  As a result, the overarching theme for my 2015 planting is “less is more”; I am paring down the amount of zucchini, cucumber and peppers as well as the type and quantity of tomatoes I plant.

With coffee in hand, Carolyn and I wandered the extensive greenhouses at Forni Brown in Calistoga searching for our favorite organic vegetable seeds and starts. I walked away with multiple vegetables and herbs in a variety of species including six types of tomatoes, two types of peppers, Persian cucumbers, four types of squash and French green beans.

Spring offers such promise of a new planting season. With my new yellow gardening gloves and cleaned trowel, pruning shears and cultivator, I can’t wait to get started.
